About Study Program

Information Technology (IT) is regaining its leading position after being left out in among the years of 2005 to 2015. The regaining has happened because of the presence of smart phone and applications which allow people to do a lot of things such as online banking, online shopping, online learning, online meeting etc. anytime and anywhere.

Many applications today have been extensively equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability, which makes them more interesting and useful. Besides, the amount of data that are generated online everyday is enormous. This huge amount of data, termed with Big Data is of little useful unless it is processed to produce usefulness insights for business, government, education, society, research etc.

SGU Bachelor IT has been in forefront in providing IT skills since the beginning. We constantly adapt our teaching to align with the demand of industry. As we have highlighted above, that the need for AI and Data Scientist as well as IT Entrepreneur is increasing, that’s why our new curriculum offered in 2020 will have these two concentrations, AI and Data Scientist and IT Entrepreneur.

We need a strong foundation for the two concentrations. The foundation courses will be given in semester 1 – 4. Among the foundation courses are courses which prepare our students to be Full Stack Developer. A full stack developer is a computer programmer, who is capable of both front and back end coding. He/she is equipped with the skills to design user interactions on websites and databases, to setup servers for website functionality as well as coding for mobile platforms.

We also prepare our student to take a professional certification of their choice. This certification would expand they knowledge and allow a smoother entrance to the job market.

Still AIM says, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that in 2026, there will be 11.5 Million data science new job created.

Not only the demand is big, but the compensation is also very promising. According to Dataconomy [2] the median base salary for data scientists in the US is more than $ 100.000 per year.
Having such a good prospect, as a candidate student you should really consider this choice if you are strong in technical aspect.

IT Entrepreneurship

The advent of many IT startups in Asia e.g. Alibaba and Grab and specifically in Indonesia e.g. Go-jek, Tokopedia and Traveloka in the last 10 years has a significant influence on young generation in establishing Startup.

Almost every university offers Entrepreneurship program and establishes business incubator. Those efforts meant to nurture students to become successful entrepreneur. However, entrepreneurship is not only about program or subjects taught. Entrepreneurship needs a good soil to grow. Besides the subjects needed to prepare the students with knowledge and technique, they need to exercise in real environment.

In BIT, many student projects that our students work on are solutions-based. It means the products of those projects would solve problems faced by the society. These types of project allow our students to learn one of the very important aspects of IT startup, that is solution to the society. If a project is potentially to be carried on, the students may establish a startup with the product they have developed during the study. We will accompany them and connect them with potential investor or find grant for them.

We have mentored some of our alumni to become entrepreneur. Some of them through our mentoring have obtained grant from the department of research and higher education. Those grants have helped them to grow. We haven’t achieved yet the big success like those startups mentioned at the beginning, however, each alumni startup is able to provide up to 20 jobs and they grow.

Are you interested? Come and join with us to be an IT Entrepreneur.

We will be happy to work with you together for your bright future.
